Since
1977, Father & Son Precision Time
has the experience in conservation, repairing,
restoring and refinishing all types of antique clocks, watches and music
boxes including: Free Estimates Our
estimate is for fine quality workmanship. We are not cheap, but our work
lasts! All repairs carry our ONE-YEAR
limited warranty for actual work performed on the timepiece movement,
exclusive of time-keeping adjustments, leveling, damage from tampering,
shock, abuse, or environmental conditions which contribute to corrosion and
wear. Additional service calls to your home are exclusive of the
repair warranty, however, you are charged only for travel; only the actual
work performed on the timepiece is warranted. No
item is fully warranted unless we have cleaned and restored the movement. If
it had to be oiled to get it running, we cannot guarantee its running order.
It will probably need cleaning and rebuilding within a couple of years. Finally,
be willing to wait to have the work done and to allow for proper testing and
adjusting. This could be from a few
weeks to a few months, depending upon the extent of services required. Please
appreciate that good craftsmanship requires proper workshop facilities,
security, complete and well maintained machinery, and, above all, craftsmen
who have earned the right to realistic compensation for restoring your
precious heirloom. Remember, timepieces
and other mechanical antiques are the only mechanisms still operating many
hundreds of years after being made. They are living testimony to man's
ingenuity and integrity. They are the earliest examples of automation and the
precursors of many of today's conveniences that we take for granted. Estimates
are provided to the extent possible with any antique mechanism. Receipts are
given; you will be treated in a professional manner; and all questions will
be answered knowledgeably. We maintain a policy of strict confidentiality to
protect your privacy and security. Some Of Our Restorations include:

If
you are shipping to us, take an extra measure of care in packing. Whatever
you are shipping, remove and wrap separately any loose parts, such as keys,
pendulums, etc. Stuff the movement with tissue paper or other soft material.
Put your name, address, and telephone number to the item you are sending.
Don’t stick it to wood because it will ruin the finish. We recommend you
first wrap the case in tissue wrapping paper, then in bubble wrap; it is
light and shock absorbing. Bubble wrap in direct contact with some finishes
sometimes reacts. Put it in a strong,
corrugated box. Tape all seams. Write your name, address, and telephone
number on the outside of the box. Put this box in a second box surrounded by
crumpled newspapers, or more bubble wrap. This will assure the best safety.
Insure your parcel; insurance is cheap.
NO foam peanuts. They
may cause the item to shift and become damaged. If
you are coming to our shop in Harrisonburg, please put it in a box that fits.
This will assure ease of handling and minimize storage problems. “What’s he doing?”........ “Cleaning, oiling, adjustments for wear,
bushing work......” Your
heirloom is completely disassembled, cleaned in special surfactant cleaning
solution, which removes all oils and dirt. The parts are then thoroughly rinsed in
fresh solution, dried and oiled. ·
Each part is examined. Deformed or worn gear teeth and
pinions are corrected or replaced on the gears. ·
Each gear pivot is polished in our jewelers lathe. We
correct for bushing wear. The “bushings” / jewels are the holes in the side
plates and bridges through which each gear “pivot” (shaft end) turns. Over
time, each bushing wears and accumulates embedded dirt. Dirt must be
physically removed, not “buzzed or swished out in a bucket.” Worn bushings are machined and new
bushings (they look like little donuts) are pressed in. When everything is
resized, assembled, and oiled, friction will be minimized. ·
The mainsprings, if your timepiece is so equipped, are
inspected and stoned to de-burr any distortions that occur over time. Since
mainsprings are not very expensive, we many times just replace them. A mainspring,
which breaks within your movement, can do substantial damage. ·
We run your timepiece for many days on our test equipment.
When we are satisfied that the movement is running properly, we install the
movement in the case, and run it for a few more days. We don’t want you to be
disappointed. The
bitterness of LOW QUALITY remains long after the sweetness of a LOW
PRICE is forgotten! Thanks
again! Father & Son Precision
